Basic Disaster Life Support™ (BDLS®) Courses (10 & 12.2.2009)

Developed by the American Medical Association and the National Disaster Life Support Educational Consortium, BDLS® is a comprehensive mass casualty medical management program targeted to multiple disciplines including emergency medical service personnel, hazardous materials personnel, public health personnel, and health care providers. The BDLS® course is a review of the all-hazards topics including natural and accidental man made events, traumatic and explosive events, nuclear and radiological events, biological events, and chemical events. The recognition and management of the disaster scene and victims are reinforced through a unique approach called the D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R paradigm, MASS triage system and Id-me triage categories. This one-day course was first introduced into Hong Kong by Spark of Life. Two courses were held at North District Hospital on 10th and 12th February 2009. The invited overseas faculty included Dr. Sonia CHACKO, Medical Director and Mr. Charles BORTLE, Director of Logistics and Field Operations, Center for Special Operations & Training, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia. The courses were well received. The participants included doctors, nurses, paramedics and first responders. Totally, there were 100 attendees, 7 required a retest and eventually all passed!
